A Manor House, Horses, and the Malé Karpaty Mountains: A Weekend 15 Minutes from Bratislava

There is a moment that repeats itself here almost every Friday. A guest arrives after work, phone still in hand and head still stuck in their last meeting. They turn off the main road into the grounds, and suddenly the car rolls over gravel between the trees. A few seconds later, the manor house courtyard opens up, a horse snorts somewhere to the right, and the Little Carpathians (Malé Karpaty) stand on the horizon. I always notice the very same thing: people go quiet. Yet we are just fifteen minutes from the center of Bratislava.

Kaštieľ Agátka sits on the edge of the city, in Chorvátsky Grob – Čierna Voda, right next to the Šúrsky prales nature reserve (a primeval alder forest). It is the first boutique hotel in Slovakia housed in a historic manor house, and it is precisely this combination—city accessibility and utter countryside quiet—that turns a weekend with us into something quite different from a conventional hotel stay. Where to find us: fifteen minutes from Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia

Let’s start with the most important detail for international guests: we are located in southwestern Slovakia, in Chorvátsky Grob – Čierna Voda, literally fifteen to twenty minutes by car from the center of Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. Bratislava is the only capital city in the world that borders two other countries—Austria and Hungary. From the airport in Vienna, you can reach us in under an hour, from Bratislava airport in twenty minutes, and from Budapest in two hours.

Slovakia is a small country in the heart of Europe: an EU and Schengen member, using the euro, where English and German are widely spoken in tourism, and prices are lower than in Vienna or Prague. We are located on its western edge—on the border of the Little Carpathians, set between vineyards and the Šúrsky prales reserve. This means you enjoy the peace of the countryside while having the city, airport, castle, Danube river, and winemaking villages all within half an hour's reach. First-time visitors to Slovakia often stay with us and explore the country from here: Trnava and Červený Kameň Castle are within forty minutes, Vienna is an hour away, and the High Tatras and central Slovak mountains are three to four hours away.

Friday evening: a slow arrival, the courtyard, and dinner

I don't recommend planning an itinerary for Friday. Friday is meant for slowing down. The rooms in the manor house are elegant yet warm—high ceilings, soft lighting, and a stillness that you simply cannot find in the city. We offer single and double rooms as well as suites, so a couple on a romantic weekend feels just as comfortable here as a family needing extra space.

Dinner is an integral part of the experience, not just an add-on service. Our restaurant cooks with fresh ingredients, and in the warmer months, tables are set outside in the leafy courtyard under the gazebo. It is right there that you understand why so many couples choose us for their wedding: as dusk falls, lights illuminate the perimeter of the courtyard, bestowing the entire grounds with an atmosphere that no newly built hotel could replicate, even with the finest architect.

If you arrive in summer, set aside half an hour after dinner for a stroll around the grounds. The outdoor pool is quiet by then, you can hear the horses in the stables, and the air carries the scent of freshly cut grass. This is precisely the kind of evening after which you sleep like you've spent the whole day hiking in the mountains.

Saturday morning: horses, golf, and Šúrsky prales

I recommend starting Saturday with the horses. The equestrian facility right on our grounds houses more than 40 horses, and you don't need to be a rider—simply coming to watch is a pleasure in itself. Children will enjoy pony rides without any grand ambitions, and adults usually linger by the paddock longer than planned. Anyone looking for a full ride can arrange a time a day in advance so we can prepare an appropriate horse.

Another highlight literally right outside our courtyard is the golf academy. It is ideal for complete beginners: nobody is judging you, you don't need your own equipment, and within an hour you'll know if the bug has bitten you. Many of our guests held a golf club for the very first time right here—and some have returned just for that reason.

The afternoon belongs to nature. Šúrsky prales is one of the oldest nature reserves in Slovakia and offers a completely different world compared to mountain spruce forests—a wetland alder forest with humid air, birdsong, and trails that feel as though a deer might step out at any moment. A loop walk takes just two to three hours and requires no special gear other than sturdy footwear. If you crave proper hills, the Little Carpathians are right in view—twenty minutes by car puts you at the trailhead above Pezinok or Modra.

Saturday evening: wineries beneath the Little Carpathians

If you pick just one extra activity for the entire weekend, make it the Small Carpathian Wine Route. Pezinok and Modra are half an hour away, and the difference between the wine you know from a supermarket shelf and what a winemaker pours for you right in their cellar is night and day. I recommend arranging a tasting in advance, ideally for early afternoon, and returning to us for dinner—or booking a transport service so both of you can enjoy the tasting.

On the way back, you can stop in Slovenský Grob. Traditional roasted goose is an institution here, and from autumn to winter, almost every house in the village carries on its own recipe tradition. If you plan to enjoy roasted goose during the peak season, book a table at least a week in advance—otherwise, you'll miss out.

Sunday: city, lakes, or castle—depending on your mood

Sunday is all about choice. Bratislava is fifteen minutes away, making it easy to enjoy breakfast at the manor house, spend the morning in the Old Town, have lunch by the Danube, and swing back for your luggage. Families with children often opt for the Sun Lakes (Slnečné jazerá) in Senec, about twenty minutes away, which offer a full beach day in the summer. A third option for history enthusiasts is Červený Kameň Castle, featuring visits to vast underground cellars and falconry displays—set aside an entire morning for this trip.

Whichever route you choose, departure from us is never hectic. A late check-out can almost always be arranged, and most guests spend their final hour sipping coffee in the courtyard. It is a much nicer farewell than standing in reception with a suitcase.

Who a manor house weekend is for—and who it isn't

Let’s be honest: if you are looking for a massive resort with entertainment staff, a waterpark, and a buffet for three hundred people, we are not the place for you. Agátka is a boutique hotel—intimate, with a personal touch, and a team that remembers how you take your coffee. Conversely, if you want a place where nature, fine food, horses, and golf come together, with the city close at hand, you will feel right at home.

It is the same for weddings and corporate events. Sprawling grounds, wedding and event venues for hundreds of guests, on-site accommodation, and in-house catering mean that the entire event takes place in one location—no transfers, no taxis, and none of the logistics that usually swallow up half the day.
